centre county library hosts 40th young author & Illustrator contest

BELLEFONTE, PA (January 30, 2025)— Centre County Library & Historical Museum invites all children in grades 1-6 who live or go to school in Centre County, PA (including the Philipsburg/Osceola Area School District) to participate in their 40th Young Author & Illustrator Contest! This beloved program has been nurturing the creativity of young minds throughout Centre County for four decades and is a highlight of the year for young aspiring authors and illustrators. Children can truly focus on their storytelling strengths and style in this competition as entries can be composed of only pictures, only writing, or both. The contest is also open to children in all types of educational settings—public, private, charter, or home school. Some local teachers even incorporate the contest into their classroom activities, with every child in the classroom submitting an entry to the contest.

Submissions to the Young Author & Illustrator Contest are due by library closing time on April 1st. Young storytellers may work individually or in a pair (if in the same grade) to write and/or illustrate their stories. All stories will be judged by community leaders and library staff. Stories in each grade level, 1st – 6th, are judged against all other stories in that grade level. The ultimate goal is for children to win 1st place in their grade. This will result in the publication of their story and its addition into the library’s permanent collection. Ultimately, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each grade—along with 2 honorable mentions—will be chosen. While not all winners will have their stories put into the library collection, all placing stories are eligible to be purchased as a hardbound book for $23.50 each. A special award ceremony will be held in late April to honor the winners.

Encourage young storytellers you know to enter the Young Author and Illustrator contest. They could join the ranks of Centre County children who have made history through this program.
